Completion of End of Term assessment and Midterm assessment is mandatory for PGY1s and PGY2s (not in a training program e.g. BPT)

Midterm Assessment

PGY1s and PGY2s (not in a training program e.g. BPT) undertake a formal midterm assessment for each term.

The purpose of this assessment is to:

  • receive timely feedback on clinical performance
  • identify any specific learning needs that emerged during the term and
  • discuss how specific learning needs can be addressed during the remainder of the term.

Mid term assessment can be completed by the primary or day to day clinical supervisor. It can be a registrar or fellow however the assessment needs to be countersigned by a consultant supervisor.  If you have any concerns please reach out to Northern Doctors Education.

Notes:

  • Assessment form is an editable pdf - encourage your supervisor to complete it digitally.
  • End of Term & Midterm Assessment forms are the same - click the box on the top of form to indicate which one you are completing.
  • Ensure both you and your supervisor sign the form.
  • Email the digitally completed form to the medical education unit: Northern Doctors Education.
  • Completed paper forms must be be scanned as a PDF and emailed to Northern Doctors Education by using the 'scan to email' function on any hospital printer. This is not encouraged as we are moving away from anything paper-based.

Interns in Term 1  (Rotation 1)

Interns in their first rotation are s advised to complete a midterm assessment in week 3 with their current registrar. This is because in week four (first week of February) a new batch of registrars start. Please note that is completely appropriate and expected as a registrar can assess your performance after a few shifts rather than relying on the new registrar starting in February to assess you.

Medical Interns

A tip is to approach your supervisor to complete mid term assessment within the first FOUR weeks as consultants change every month.

End of Term Assessment

The End of Term discussion is an opportunity to:

    • provide feedback for the unit (including training opportunities and culture)
    • discuss future career directions
    • pulse check on your wellbeing
  • Contact your term supervisor 2-3 weeks prior to the end of term to arrange a time to meet to complete your end of term assessment. The Term Supervisors list can be accessed in the Term Descriptions on the Northern Health Medical Education channel here. If  your Term Supervisor is not on this list reach out to Northern Doctors Education.

Kai Cooper is the IMG Affairs Coordinator at Northern Doctors Workforce. He can assist with visa, APHRA, onboarding, WRIG and ORIG etc.

  • Once you obtain general registration, feedback is optional but important for learning and sometimes it's required for applying to college training programs.

What is the difference between  Midterm and End of Term Assessment?

Midterm assessment is important to obtain timely feedback on your performance, identify any specific learning needs and discuss how they can be addressed while End of Term Assessment is important to get feedback on your performance and evidence to support the decision by the Assessment Review Panel to progress you to the next level of training at the end of the clinical year.
